Nubia: Past and Present

Gateway to a Nubian house, Sudan. Gateways are an important part of the architecture of houses in this region. Traditionally they are made from mud-brick, but more recently people use concrete or a combination of the two materials. Metal doors have replaced the traditional wooden doors; however, the bright colours and decorative elements are maintained.
